Origins: In 2004 we began noticing a new scam targeting those searching for part-time paid duties that could be performed from home. This new con uses the promise of high-paying work to lure eager job seekers into being defrauded themselves or used to steal from others.

Those so led down the garden path are pulled in by advertisements for jobs involving the forwarding of monies or goods collected in the U.S. to business entities in other countries. Supposedly, the successful applicants will make thousands of dollars through working from home for a few hours a week, with no special skills or training required. Sometimes international wire transfers are specifically mentioned in these solicitations, and the terms "import/export specialist," "marketing manager," and "financial manager" often turn up in their wording. The reputations of the venues where the ads are found proves no protection to those looking for such opportunities, in that this work-at-home scam has been touted thousands of times on popular job web sites including Monster, Careerbuilder, Careers.com, and Yahoo! Hotjobs.

This con operates in one of two of ways, both of which leaves hopeful job seekers in a mess of trouble:

In its more usual incarnation, successful job applicants are tasked with depositing checks for varying amounts (anywhere from a few thousand dollars all the way into the six-figure range) into their personal bank accounts and relaying to their new employers 95% of the amount banked, keeping 5% as their commission. The explanation given by the employers for that which necessitates their having someone cash checks on their behalf varies from come-on to come-on, but the need to believe in 'something for nothing' (in this case a high steady income in return for a few hours' work per week) blinds the about-to-be-defrauded to the glaring implausibilities inherent to these tall tales of strange government-imposed restrictions, exorbitant tax rates in the homeland, the need to fly under a competitor's radar, and the like. The checks the unsuspecting dupes are given to deposit are worthless, but this detail is not discovered by them or their banks until weeks after the fact, which is long after 95
% of the face value of said financial instruments has been wired to the thieves. As is the case in the 'cashier check' scam (sellers are duped into accepting cashier checks in excess of the amounts they seek for their goods on the understanding they are to forward the additional monies to third parties), the scam works because the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) requires banks to make money from cashier's, certified, or teller's checks available in one to five days. Consequently, funds from checks that might not be good are often released into payees' accounts long before the checks themselves have been honored by their issuing banks. High quality forgeries can be bounced back and forth between banks for weeks before anyone catches on to their being worthless.

In this form of the scheme, those who'd thought they were about to pack up and move to Easy Street thanks to their new jobs as international relayers instead find themselves on the hook for the amounts they wired to others. That the original checks were worthless does not absolve those who deposited them from financial responsibility for the funds they subsequently instructed their banks to pay out — the two transactions (the deposit and the disbursement) are regarded as separate. Therefore, if a hypothetical erstwhile wire transfer facilitator handled a bogus check for $10,000, instead of netting $500 (his 5% fee), he would be out $9,500 (the amount he had his bank wire to those who'd conned him).

The mayhem doesn't neccesarily end there. There is a further danger that, now armed with the dupe's banking information from the wire transfer, these same thieves can use those numbers to create a demand draft to withdraw funds without confirmation from the hapless job seeker's bank account until there's nothing left in it but dust.

In another version of the con, those who land these coveted 'jobs' are tasked with collecting payments from their new employers' clients in the U.S. and wiring these funds back to the home office, retaining a specified portion of the recouped accounts as their fees. Only after the fact does it come to light that the deposited checks were for non-existent merchandise vended through online auction sites, usually about the time that the police come a'knocking on the door.

This form of the wire transfer scam mirrors a type of the CNP fraud in which job-seeking dupes are hired to repackage and ship to Nigeria goods purchased on stolen credit cards. As with the wire transfer come-on, the promise of easy, high-paying part-time work blinds those who unwittingly become part of an international theft ring thanks to their desire to believe in the job fairy. In both cases, they're the ones left holding the bag when the police turn up to ask questions about the monies or goods others have been duped out of.
Those searching for employment opportunities that will allow them to work from home are all too often the very people who can least afford to be defrauded. Although a great many folks daydream about earning livable incomes from the comfort of their dens rather than having to make the trek to their offices each day, they do not as a general rule of thumb search for such job openings with the same fervor as do the elderly, the physically afflicted, or the parents committed to remaining at home with their preschool children. Members of those groups hunt for work-at-home opportunities because laboring in more traditional job settings is impossible for them. Because genuine offers of work of this nature are few and far between, with the need to secure a steady income becoming more of a pressing issue with each passing non-employed day, those folks are at far greater risk of being victimized by such schemes — their desperation leads them to be gulled by pie-in-the-sky promises and mollified by the wild backstories
that go with them whereas the financially better off are more likely to remain convinced something is very wrong with the offer of mucho bucks in exchange for only a few hours' labor performed from home each week by folks possessed of no special training or skills.

How To Avoid Falling Victim To Reshipper Scams:
Avoid job listings that use these descriptions: "package forwarding," "reshipping," "money transfers," "wiring funds" and "foreign agent agreements." These and similar phrases should raise a red flag.

Do not be fooled by official-sounding corporate names. Some scam artists operate under names that sound like those of long-standing, reputable firms.

Never forward or transfer money from any of your personal accounts on behalf of your employer. Also, be suspicious if you are asked to "wire" money to an employer. If a legitimate job requires you to make money transfers, the money should be withdrawn from the employer’s business account, not yours.

Do not give out your personal financial information. A potential legitimate employer will not request your bank account, credit card or Paypal account number. Provide your banking information only if you are hired by a legitimate company and you choose to have your paycheck direct deposited.

Do not fax copies of your ID or Social Security number to someone you have never met. Credit checks and fake IDs can be obtained with this information. Give these documents to your employer only when you are physically at the place of employment.

If you have questions about the legitimacy of a job listing, contact your Better Business Bureau, your state or local consumer agency, or the Federal Trade Commission.

Why would anyone pay you to do what a machine can do better and faster. Any company offering envelope stuffing should be presumed to be a scam.

All reports I have ever read are that these are scams. Machinery (or interns) can stuff envelopes much cheaper than individuals working from home who get paid by the envelope. There are direct mail companies with the capabilities to stuff thousands of envelopes an hour at a minimal cost.

I got info on the program and okay, it might be a scam, but I wanna know if anyone else has done it. It says it's $35 to start & they send you the envelopes and postage. I've read all the info and I'm just wondering HOW it's a scam IF it's a scam. I think it said they pay $4 per envelope you mail out. It says the 35 dollars is for the "complete home mailer program". Can anyone enlighten me?
PS - I have a full-time job, just looking for something to get a little extra income so I'm not looking for a TON of money, but anything would help & I don't mind spending 35 dollars to try it out.

You read an ad or get a piece of junk mail claiming that "Aunt Edna" makes $1,845.20 every week by doing fun and easy work right from her favorite armchair. For every envelope stuffed you earn $1 or $2 or some other amount.
Often the advertisement asks for an up-front fee of $29.95 or more just to make sure "you're serious" about their envelope stuffing program.

So far, so good. Easy work, big money. Being the cautious person you are, you may even read the ad several times to make sure you didn't miss anything.

Nope. Didn't miss anything. Sounds perfect!

You pay the fee and send off for the package. After all, they guaranteed your satisfaction with their envelope stuffing starter package (watch out! did you read the conditions on that guarantee?).

When your starter package arrives - assuming it does arrives - you gleefully tear it open. Yippee!

Your family watches you from a respectful distance, perplexed that you have found salvation in such a little package, and relieved because over the last few days you've been salivating so much there isn't an unlicked envelope within 100 meters of the desk.

As you read the literature in the package, it slowly dawns on you - you're not going to get paid $1 or $2 for every envelope you stuff. The instructions tell you to spread the news about the enveloping stuffing biz, then you'll get paid.

How, exactly, does that work, you ask?

By advertising the envelope stuffing program, of course.

Yep, they want you to help them earn those up-front fees by sending out the same letter you read and got so excited about.

They didn't tell you that part before you mailed your check, did they? You see, they won't pay you until they get paid.

Details, details.

How might one be instructed to advertise the program to others?

Well, you can place an ad asking people to send you a dollar to find out about the envelope stuffing program. That's how you earn $1,845.20 every week.

Or perhaps you could put up a web site? They won't tell you this, but make sure you don't post a legit phone number or a physical address. People tend to get angry when they've been scammed.

This is a big business. There are people promoting these envelope stuffing programs making thousands upon thousands of dollars from people who send in those up-front fees.

Does it provide a real service or product that has value?

While there are many variations to this envelope stuffing rip-off, they all follow the same pattern: get your money before you figure out how this scam really works.

The best way is to integrate your marketing communications program…Overlap your ads to provide maximum exposure to the most peoiple in your target areas…yoiur ads should say the phone # and website…the website, "As seen in (publication name)"…etc.

Pennysavers are great…watch the zones and ad sizes…try to run an insane special for 'X' amount of sq foot…free gutters with every full 30 yr roof…etc. BUT, make it something he can afford. They will provide free artwork and try NOT to bury the ad…maybe a detached mailing label…slip sheet. Or testing it run a (10 week minimum) ad in the service guide in the back. Inserts are also greeat and you can do B&W for between 35-50 per 1000 CPM (Cost per thousand)…some minimums apply.

Yes there are scam free no cost work from home jobs. What can you do? What are your experiences out there in the traditional world? There's a lot of things you can apply to and have a job working from home. The hiring process is the same as a traditional job. They expect certain qualifications, experiences, some will train though. Same as a traditional job. There are places like Alpine, West and a few others that are scam free. They are just jobs though. Nothing more, but they are scam free.

I found and applied for this job on Yahoo hot jobs. The guy who wants me to be his personal assistant wants me to send and receive payments and he wants me to cash the checks at my bank (sounds fishy). That's the scam. He's obscured it pretty well with the rest of the job description. You deposit his cheque and draw new cheques against it, which you'll send to him (whether you know it or not). His cheque bounces, yours clears, and you're on the hook to your bank for the entire amount.

Also make sure to read all the way to the bottom because I have included a list of the top 10 work at home scams. I am a mother of two little girls who are actually tugging on my arm as I write this so I will try to be brief. Many people are looking for work from home companies. All the scams definitely create a big problem but also, there is a problem of people misunderstanding the difference between work from home "jobs" and work from home opportunities. There really are not work from home “jobs”. To get that you have to start working for a company in their offices first, then they MAY allow you to take the job home.

Most of the work from home opportunities that are legitimate offers are not an hourly pay type job. They are business opportunities that help you in starting your own business from your home. What you should do first is to decide if you are simply looking for an hourly rate type job or if you are looking for more of an opportunity for additional income such as what you would make in your own business being your own boss from home. Small home businesses have some small costs involved, less than $500 to start is reasonable and I would stay away from those wanting $1000-$5000. It doesn’t cost that much to start and run a home business so you shouldn’t pay it.

If you are coming across places that say free then I would RUN don’t walk the other way! They never are. I tried them many a times and 3 weeks later I had to buy this and 6 weeks later that. After 6 months these “free businesses” had cost me over $800 on average.

TOP 10 WORK AT HOME SCAMS:

10. Craft Assembly

This scam encourages you to assemble toys, dolls, or other craft projects at home with the promise of high per-piece rates. All you have to do is pay a fee up-front for the starter kit… which includes instructions and parts. Sounds good? Well, once you finish assembling your first batch of crafts, you'll be told by the company that they "don't meet our specifications." No matter what you won’t get paid.

9. Medical Billing

In this scam, you pay $300-$900 for everything (supposedly) you need to start your own medical billing service at home. You're promised state-of-the-art medical billing software, as well as a list of potential clients in your area.

What you're not told is that most medical clinics process their own bills, or outsource the processing to firms, not individuals. Your software may not meet their specifications, and often the lists of "potential clients" are outdated or just plain wrong.

8. Email/Rebate Processing

This is a twist on the classic "envelope stuffing scam" (see #1 below). For a low price ($50?) you can become a "highly-paid" email processor working "from the comfort of your own home."

Now… what do you suppose an email processor does? If you have visions of forwarding or editing emails, forget it. What you get for your money are instructions on spamming the same ad you responded to in newsgroups and Web forums!

7. "A List of Companies Looking for Home workers!"

In this one, you pay a small fee for a list of companies looking for home workers just like you. The only problem is that the list is usually a generic list of companies, companies that don't take home workers, or companies that may have accepted home workers long, long ago.

6. "Just Call This 1-900 Number For More Information…"

Not much to say here. Don’t Call!

5. Typing At Home / Data Entry

Here's how it works: After sending the fee to the scammer for "more information," you receive a disk and printed information that tells you to place home typist ads and sell copies of the disk to the suckers who reply to you. Like #8, this scam tries to turn you into a scammer!

4. "Turn Your Computer Into a Money-Making Machine!"

Well, this one's at least half-true. To be completely true, it should read: "Turn your computer into a money-making machine… for scammers!"

This is much the same scam as #5, above. Once you pay your money, you'll be sent instructions on how to place ads and pull in suckers to "turn their computers into money-making machines."

3. Pyramid Schemes (this is NOT the same as Multi-Level Marketing MLM)

If you've heard of network marketing (like Amway, Mary Kay or Pampered Chef), then you know that there are legitimate MLM businesses based on agents selling products or services.

The problem arises when there is no legitimate product or service at all and it is all about finding new recruits and not only can you lose all your money, but you can be charged with fraud, too!

2. Chain Letters/Emails ("Make Money Fast")

They promise that all you have to do is send the email along plus some money by mail to the top names on the list, then add your name to the bottom… and one day you'll be a millionaire.

Actually, the only thing you might be one day is prosecuted for fraud. This is a classic pyramid scheme.

1. Envelope Stuffing

This is THE classic work-at-home scam. It's been around since the U.S. Depression of the 1920s and 1930s, and it's moved onto the Internet like a cockroach you just can't eliminate.

There are several variations, but here's a sample: Much like #5 and #4 above, you are promised to be paid $1-2 for every envelope you stuff. All you have to do is send money and you're guaranteed "up to 1,000 envelopes a week that you can stuff… with postage and address already affixed!"

When you send your money, you get a short manual with flyer templates you're supposed to put up around town, advertising yet another harebrained work-from-home scheme.

SO that’s the top 10.

Please beware of these scams. There are some legit home businesses out there so be careful. Look for companies in business over 10 years. Look for companies with a needed product or service, something you would be proud to represent. Look for companies that have a national reputation and are members of the US Chamber of Commerce.

Also, don't be hung up on the BBB either. Did you know, common misconception here, that the BBB is NOT a government regulated agency? That in fact, they are local independently owned franchises where anyone, who pays the right price, can be a member in “good standing”. This is true!

As for those of you who say…..”I want to work from home but I don’t want to have to pay for anything”. Well, that’s great! But it will never happen. Let’s be honest, there is no such thing as a free lunch. As we talked about above there is a difference between a job and a business. You should NEVER have to pay for a job….but again…chances of finding a home job are about 3%. At any rate, if it is a true honest home business you need to expect to pay….Mr. Walt Disney didn’t start the Disney empire “without paying for anything”. Neither did Mr. Sam Walton, owner of Wal-Mart.

There's this company, paid2mail.co.uk (please check out the site b4 answering if u can), which is basically envolope-mailing but it says you do have do some work such as checking details, and it's not a get-rich-quick-scheme. They pay basic plus comission if yr mailing creates an order. DO you think it's worth it? Is it legal to resell games, softwares, and videos that you’ve bought?

I have had this issue in my head for the past couple days, it all started one day with my friend. He bought a video in a retail store for around $30. After he and his family have watched it, he decided to make a copy of it for backup purposes. A friend of his proposed to buy the retail copy of the video for $8. The issue here is my friend is selling the retail copy for $8, not the copied one. Does reselling infringe any copyright law? I say it is illegal, but my friend’s family say it is not illegal because they are selling the retail copy.

There are two ways this would be legal:

1. You have purchased each copy of the ebook you want to sell (so if you're offering 15 for sale, you actually bought 15 copies)

2. You have an agreement with the books publisher or author (if they are self published) that allows you to sell the book.

Other than that, I doubt it's legal.

Although I offer resell rights for the item I'm selling, I do not allow people to copy my copyrighted text and pictures (nor does ebay). I even added html code into the page to stop people from copying it (it prevents them from highlighting or right clicking anything), but somehow this person found a way around this. I already reported them to ebay and supplied my proof of copyright but I want to know how to prevent others.

I run Windows XP in a Franken-Computer with an Intel Duel Core and 1 GB RAM.

I have Symantec/Norton Anti Virus and my Subscription is up in 29 days.

If I remember correctly, it will like like, $50.00 to renew the subscription.

ALL I hear is that Norton and ANYTHING Symantec is a worthless piece of crap.

So I'm wondering… For about the price of renewing my Norton, can you recomend an Anti Virus Software that is better?

if you are going to go with AVG, don't even bother with the free version. if you really are paranoid about security, then pay for version 8. Symantec gets a bad rap but they actually are very good. the only problem with them is
* Some products (like Norton 360) are huge and take up a lot of resources. this will slow down your computer's performance. (i would never recommend anything beyond internet security.)
* Installation can sometimes go wrong. if it does you have to download an uninstaller program, run and reinstall the software again. that is it. but most people don't like to read instructions or call tech support.

Anti-virus/spyware programs are designed for prevention. they are useless once your computer is infected. no matter how good the program is it will do very little

if AVG does not have anti-virus protection, get their anti-virus program. you will usually have the least amount of problems when you stick to the same vendor.

Quick books seems geared toward bisnesses and a bit more complicated than I want or need. WHat else is good.

Quicken and Microsoft Money are very comparable. CNet reviews give both of them a 7.3 rating on a 1-10 scale.

I have used both - and currently use Microsoft Money. While both software versions say you can convert between them, you really don't want to do that because you can end up with corrupted files over time (has happened to me).

I would look around and see which one you can get the best price on and choose that way - if you do your taxes with TurboTax, you can get a rebate on Quicken, so that might be your best bet.

Depends on what you need the software for. For just regular bookkeeping, Quickbooks is fine.

As to scheduling, I've seen schedulers use anything from a MS Word table to a common spiral-bound notebook.

Any site that asks you for money to sign up too, or it seems to good to be true, OR you can't understand how the money is being made from, don't even consider. There are some survey sites as you have found, but the surveys you can do are limited. I blog and add affiliates and do some eBay, but they take time. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products.

Well, I love Europe in general. Both are westernized and very modern countries, but Iceland is ranked the #1 most developed country in the world. There is basically 0% poverty, and the quality of life is very high. However, the culture might not be cosmopolitan enough. I love in America, so anywhere in Europe is a step up, but, living in the Ile de France is my dream and there is nothing like Paris and its suburbs. Urban life and culture has been mastered in Paris and it is my favorite city in the world. Also, the suburbs are great as well. Everything has this sort of urbaness to it. Reykjavik is also nice as well and is known for its sort of "up north" chicness with clubs and boutiques, but it might seem a little desolate for somebody who is concidering Paris. Also, I think the small business market may be better in the Paris area and I don't know what particular business you own, but most places in Europe are designed so small businesses thrive. There are no highways fil
led with strip malls and most stores are located on walkable streets and highways only help the Paris metro as the highways in Europe are really nice in general. Also, Europeans and especially the French appreciate small businesses and goods. In Iceland, I am sure there are similarities, but I think there is not as much opportunity life wise. You could easily do just as well in both, but the Paris metro allows people to live great and exciting lives. Everything is connected by RER and although Iceland is also a great country, the quality of life in France is better. Granted, Paris is ranked way below Iceland in some areas of freedom/government and the quality of life based on monetary value is not as high, but there is nothing like France. It is probably the best country in the world.

I work as an accounting assistant at the moment and and on around $40k. The accountant at work gets around $60k. I think Chartered Accountants get more. Its quite interesting and varied. You get to understand the workings of a business, not just number crunching. I think you can do like an entry level degree over 3yrs full time which will put your foot in the door of a Chartered Accountant as a junior or somewhere as an assistant like me. Theres alot to know and its also a very good base if you decide to go into business for yourself later as you'll be able to do all your own accounts.

It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for starting a for-profit business.

One possible exception is for companies developing or exporting agricultural goods, including food and forest product. Another exception could be the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs http://www.sba.gov/aboutsba/sbaprograms/… , which fund the research and development of technological innovation that meets specific government needs.

Your best bet actually will be from the states if they offer grant programs for women (or any other special interest groups — minorities, women, disabled, veterans, etc). Or check with non profit organizations, particularly women organizations if they offer grants. Examples include

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online http://gtionline.fdncenter.org . It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don't have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.

I am starting a small, computer system building business. The specifics, I believe, has potential to do very well (though I don't expect to become the next Michael Dell). The problem is, I have no money to my name to advertise with. Is there a good way to market that costs nothing (or, at very least, a minimal amount)?

The best free advertising is a good reputation and word of mouth, starting with your own. Always carry a lots of business cards, making it a point to give x amount (lots of them) away every week, do this while you tell exactly what can be expect from your service and of you, offer some kind of guarantee or follow-up service, Then when you are called upon, work to build a great reputation by being super professional: show up early, have a great attitude and show your gratitude for the opportunity to do business.

Give referral 'rewards' to satisfied customers.

Do Community service: Offer a free service or 'service donation' to a local community non-profit organisation with media clout and good local network with businesses such as a community radio station, library, schools, churches, etc.

If you start a small business based on numbers, profit etc, then you will be miserable, have a bad business, and fail. my cousin is a medical transcriptionist. I dont think she even had to go to school. You go to a class or two or something simple and then you listen to medical tapes and type what they say. Due to a recent split, I know am a single parent of a 4 year old and a now must pay all the bills on just my income. I used to work at a Hilton reservations call center a long time ago and I remember it being a decent job so I decided to look into working for them again. The closest call center is a little over an hour away (not including traffic)! Then I read on their website that they have work at home jobs for their Dallas and Tampa locations. This would be perfect for me HOWEVER it says you have to live in a particular area code to apply. Like I said before, I do live in the general area of one of these call centers and I do know people who live in that area code.

My question is why does the area code matter? Do they want to make sure you live close enough for training? Do you need a working landline with that area code in order to receive the phone calls? Would I be able to give them my friend's address and phone number to apply and get the job and then work out the details later? Anyone who has done this or has knowledge of this, please let me know how it works!!

Each call center company will have different restrictions as to location, some don't have any at all. There are many companies out there so don't limit yourself to this one if you don't meet their requirements. Not sure what you're asking. If you're asking about deducting your internet service as a business expense, that's not allowed. Like basic local phone service it's presumed that you'd have internet access anyway so basic service isn't deductible.

Now, if you had to use a premium business-class internet service (T-1, SDSL, VDSL, ect.) you could deduct the additional cost compared to consumer-class internet service, apportioned betweem the business and personal use.

Also, business expenses don't go on Schedule A. They are not itemized deductions. Business expenses go on Schedule C along with the business income.

Is there really any that are legit?

There are plenty of real home businesses. I have been with Tupperware since '03. There are plenty of home party plans that have been around for years. People think that you don't make money with a company like Tupperware or that only the top few make any money. That isn't true and if you look into the companies you will see the proof.

I recently lost my job as a sales rep. I want to find something that I can do from home. Maybe with selling involved. Not stuffing envelopes.
